A Call For Help :-)
Ok, now I need a bit of help here. I was planning on going to SE Asia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam for Christmas and New Year's. However ... my travel partner recently quit her job and might not be able to make it. I'm looking to make a new plan...
I looked into tickets to Europe, and most of them are incredibly expensive. If I fly Aero-Flot I can get a ticket at a good price ... but I'm afraid it comes with a drunk pilot included.
I could, of course, stay in Japan. Some of my co-workers will. Even though New Year's is mostly a family holiday here, there are still plenty of people who like to party, and I'm sure there would be something cool to do.
But I've never been to Thailand or Vietnam, so that would be very neat, too. I can see myself sitting on a warm beach in Thailand, sipping sweet drinks and reading good books for a week or so. Is anyone else heading down there around that time? Any holiday-travelers at all? You can tell me; I won't join you if it sounds like a romantic get-away is planned. :-)
Also, since I'm kinda brand new to Thailand, if I go, where should I go? I'd like for there to be both beautiful beaches and parties, but not too much party ... I don't like to get to a beach littered with cigarettes and broken glass in the morning. But maybe that never happens in Thailand. Or maybe that always happens in Thailand. As I said, I'm a total beginner here. Help me out, please.
Or if you have some other suggestions that's not too far from Japan ... any ideas happily accepted!

Don't be scared!
Kurisumas horidaisu in Japan can be quite a thrill, or... well, at least New Year's at Shibuya was a treat I'll remember for a long time still. You thought it was crowded during the daily commute? Think again!
Christmas was, in fact, quite dull with most the colleagues at KDDI heading straight for their families and whatever they do there. Stores and restaurants also suffer what feels like a complete shutdown during this period, though it used to be worse back in the day I was told.
I, however, had two things coming for me last year in Japan. First, I knew my brother would come shortly before New Year's to party the heck out of Tokyo. Second, on Christmas Eve, through a friend of a friend, I managed to get invited to an 'all japanese' X-mas party with an open bar. A couple of hours after midnight I'd lost track of the Swedish guy I came with, hit the Karaoke with a completely unknown sarariman, who had apparently worked all night, and made the acquaintance of a British undertaker with a taste for strong cider. Then we hit a 24/7 sushiya and feasted on raw fin while waiting for the trains to start running again.
Man... I sure miss Japan! Wish you the time of your life, wherever it might be during the holidays. You're still a lucky bastard. :-)

Mats.
Lessen, synd att du inte skulle dit i januari/februari för då är undertecknad (övertecknad?) och flickvän i Thailand... Du får ta och masa dig till Svedala i stället över jul i stället.
Hi Mats,
Thanks. Obviously, I'd have to be lucky to find a cool christmas party like that ... and it's not like I'm afraid of staying here, I mean, there's always something to do. But it's become a bit of a tradition for me to go traveling over Christmas (last year I went to Quebec City in Canada, the year before was Hawaii) so I thought I was going to keep that up.
But now I haven't gotten any suggestions that I can use, so what do I know... Maybe I'll just save my money and have fun here in Japan. I already know about a New Years party. :-)
Mange,
Vart i Thailand aker ni till? Ar det ett bra / trevligt / rojigt / metal / goa - stalle? :-)
